More than 1,300 years of combined service have been honoured in Mullumbimby, including a member who joined the Federal Rural Fire Brigade way back in 1971.
NSW Rural Fire Service members from across the Far North Coast were recognised at a medal ceremony in Mullumbimby on Saturday, 24 October.
Minister for the North Coast Janelle Saffin joined RFS Acting Deputy Commissioner Viki Campbell to present four National Medal awards and 44 Long Service Medal awards and clasps.
Among the recipients was John Nardi AFSM, who was recognised for 55 years of service. He spent more than two decades as Brigade Captain, helping train and mentor generations of local firefighters.
Four other members were recognised for at least 50 years of service. They are Wardell Brigade members Raymond Collyer AFSM, Gayle Collyer, and Lorraine Judge, along with Michael Pyke from Main Arm Brigade.
The ceremony also honoured the late Jeffrey Scott, who served for 39 years with Mullumbimby and Main Arm brigades. His award was presented posthumously.
“These members have given decades of their lives to protecting their neighbours, responding to emergencies and supporting their local brigades,” Ms Campbell said.
“The experience and knowledge of all members being recognised today is invaluable in preparing the next generation of firefighters and ensuring our brigades are ready when communities need them most.”
Ms Saffin said the awards highlighted the important role RFS volunteers play across the region.
“From devastating bush fires to major floods, our RFS volunteers have been there through some of the most challenging times,” she said.
“The Far North Coast has a proud history of communities coming together in times of need, and our local RFS brigades are an important part of that.”
“I congratulate all recipients and thank their families for the support that makes their service possible.”
