Bridge works and tunnel closures to slow North Coast drivers in November

Drivers heading through Harwood, Wardell, and Tweed Heads are in for slower trips in November, with bridge maintenance and overnight closures of the Tugun Bypass Tunnel.

Transport for NSW will carry out essential maintenance on Harwood Bridge and Wardell Bridge next week.

Work starts on Harwood Bridge on Monday, 2 November, for two days. It will then move to Wardell Bridge from Wednesday, 4 November, for three days, weather permitting.

Crews will work from 6am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. A single lane closure and reduced speed limit will be in place to keep motorists and workers safe.

Bridge lift operations will remain in service.

A work vehicle parking area will be set up next to Byron Street, south of Wardell Bridge. Byron Street and River Drive will see more traffic while equipment is moved to and from the site.

Further north, the Tugun Bypass Tunnel on the Pacific Motorway at Tweed Heads West will close overnight on multiple nights in November for routine maintenance.

The tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 8pm to 5am for three nights from Monday, 2 November, reopening at 5am on Thursday, 5 November.

It will then close again from 8pm to 5am for five nights from Sunday, 15 November, reopening at 5am on Friday, 20 November.

Detours suitable for all vehicles will be in place:

  • On the nights of 2, 3, 4, 15, 16, and 19 November, northbound traffic will be diverted at the Gold Coast Highway (Tugun exit) onto Tugun Currumbin Road, rejoining the Pacific Motorway at Currumbin. Southbound traffic will be diverted at Tugun Currumbin Road (exit 95) onto the Gold Coast Highway, rejoining the Pacific Motorway at Tweed Heads West (Gold Coast Highway on-ramp).
  • On the nights of 17 and 18 November, northbound traffic will exit the M1 Pacific Motorway at Kennedy Drive, then take Sugarwood Drive to the Gold Coast Highway and Tugun Currumbin Road, rejoining the M1 at Currumbin. Southbound traffic will exit at Tugun Currumbin Road (exit 95), follow it to the Gold Coast Highway, then take Cordyline Drive to rejoin the M1 at the Kennedy Drive on-ramp.

Motorists should allow up to five extra minutes, drive to the conditions, and follow signs and traffic control.

The tunnel is maintained every three months, with checks on its operating and safety systems.
