Grafton artists wanted for $283.8m hospital rebuild

Clarence Valley artists have a rare chance to leave their mark on the new Grafton Base Hospital, with expressions of interest now open for the redevelopment’s arts program.

Artists with strong connections to Grafton Base Hospital or the Clarence Valley are invited to apply.

The NSW Government is investing $283.8 million in the Grafton Base Hospital Redevelopment, which will deliver modern, purpose-built, and enhanced health services, including a new multi-storey acute services building.

There are opportunities for artists at every stage of their career to contribute artwork throughout the new building and its landscaped spaces, helping create a healing and supportive environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Projects include artwork built into the main entrance walkway, a First Nations Garden and Yarning Space, large-scale printed wall graphics, and original framed artworks.

“The arts program complements the expanded and enhanced health services being delivered as part of the Grafton Base Hospital Redevelopment and will help create a welcoming and supportive environment that will enhance the experience for patients, staff and visitors,” said Health Infrastructure Executive Director South Region Amanda Bock.

“The arts program offers a fantastic opportunity for local artists to be involved in the hospital redevelopment and reflect Grafton’s unique culture and community within the new facility.”

Applicants need to show strong community links to the Clarence Valley or Grafton Base Hospital, include examples of previous work, and be available to work with the project team to deliver the artworks in 2028.

“By integrating art into the planning and design of new health facilities at Grafton Base Hospital, we will be creating spaces that support connection, comfort and a sense of belonging,” said Northern NSW Local Health District Chief Executive Tracey Maisey.

“We look forward to working with local artists to develop artworks that will be featured in public and clinical areas of the redeveloped Grafton Base Hospital.”

An online information briefing will be held on Thursday, 12 November, from 9.30am to 10.30am AEDT, where artists can learn more and ask questions. The session can be joined at https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/457174910043802?p=KbnwlFZNYRXtdavDX6.

Expressions of interest close at 11.59pm AEDT on Friday, 15 January 2027.

The redevelopment is being delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with Northern NSW Local Health District and main works contractor Richard Crookes Constructions.

Questions about the submission process can go to Health Infrastructure Creative Producer Kattie Bugeja at hi-arts@health.nsw.gov.au or 0422 458 622.
