Happy Mother’s Day! What’s on across the North Coast to celebrate Mums

Mother’s Day across the North Coast is set to bring a wide mix of community events, coastal experiences, creative workshops, markets and live entertainment. From Ballina to Port Macquarie, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and beyond, the weekend offers plenty of ways to celebrate – whether that’s getting active, getting creative, or simply spending time together.

Alongside organised events, the region also lends itself naturally to low-cost or free Mother’s Day plans, with beaches, rivers, coastal walks, parks and local markets offering easy, accessible ways to mark the day without significant expense.

Beyond the flowers and breakfast-in-bed traditions, Mother’s Day also has a long-established cultural history.

Modern Mother’s Day traces its origins to early 20th-century campaigns in the United States led by activist Anna Jarvis, who advocated for a dedicated day recognising the role and sacrifices of mothers. The idea spread internationally and was adopted in Australia soon after.

By the 1920s, Mother’s Day had become widely recognised across Australia and is now held annually on the second Sunday in May. While it has become more commercial over time, its central focus remains appreciation, gratitude and time with family.

In 2026, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, 10 May.

Low-cost and free ways to celebrate on the North Coast

The North Coast offers plenty of simple, low-cost ways to spend Mother’s Day weekend. Coastal walks, beach picnics, riverfront parks, and exploring local towns such as Byron Bay, Ballina, Bellingen and Coffs Harbour remain popular choices.

Community markets, foreshore spaces and nature reserves also provide free or low-cost options for families wanting a relaxed, flexible way to spend time together. Many of the most memorable Mother’s Day moments in the region come from simply slowing down and enjoying the natural surroundings.
