Lismore City Council will investigate lease or licence arrangements to support a dedicated security presence at the Transit Centre for up to 12 months, following ongoing concerns about vandalism, anti-social behaviour and community safety.
The council says the move is aimed at improving safety, deterring unlawful behaviour and supporting Council Rangers and NSW Police in monitoring the area.
Lismore Mayor Steve Krieg said the council was taking practical steps to address issues at the site and restore community confidence.
“We all know how challenging the Transit Centre has become, with ongoing vandalism and anti-social behaviour creating ongoing issues for both Council and the community,” he said.
“This arrangement is about acting to improve safety, increase visibility at the site and help deter unlawful behaviour while Council works through a longer-term solution.”
The council has delegated authority to the General Manager to investigate and negotiate the arrangements required to support the security presence.
The Transit Centre will remain closed until a suitable activation model is in place to support the facility’s long-term safety and use.
