Free road safety workshops to help Ballina seniors stay safe and independent

Older drivers across Ballina Shire are being encouraged to plan for their changing transport needs, with free road safety workshops being held next week.

Ballina Shire Council will host two sessions on Tuesday, 10 November, aimed at helping residents aged over 65 stay safe and mobile, whether they are continuing to drive or preparing to give up their licence.

The workshops will cover road safety, public and community transport options, mobility scooters and licensing requirements for drivers aged 75 and 85.

Ballina Shire Council and Transport for NSW Road Safety Officer Helen Carpenter said the sessions would help older residents make informed decisions about their transport needs.

“Changes in health and lifestyles can have impacts on safety when you’re out and about. Whether you drive, ride, walk, catch public or community transport, or use a mobility scooter, these workshops can help you keep moving safely,” said Carpenter.

Participants will also receive information about commonly misunderstood road rules and practical advice on planning for their future transport needs.

The workshops will be held in the Gawandii and Jullum rooms at Lighthouse Beach Ballina Surf Club.

Two attendance options are available:

  • Option 1: 9am to 12.15pm, including a road safety presentation from 9am to 10am, followed by the workshop from 10.15am to 12.15pm.
  • Option 2: 10.15am to 2pm, including the workshop from 10.15am to 12.15pm and an afternoon road safety presentation from 1pm to 2pm.

The road safety presentation, delivered by Transport for NSW, will provide advice on transport planning for older drivers.

The workshop will feature representatives from community transport providers, local bus services, Service NSW and Transport for NSW, including information about the Live Traffic NSW app.

Police will also be available to answer questions.

Attendance is free, but registration is required.

Residents can register for either session through Humanitix.
