The long-awaited duplication of Ocean Drive in Port Macquarie has officially been completed, marking the largest road infrastructure investment ever undertaken by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council (PMHC).
The $123 million project, jointly funded by the NSW Government and PMHC, has transformed a 3.2-kilometre stretch of Ocean Drive into a four-lane divided corridor, easing congestion and improving safety in one of the Mid North Coast’s fastest-growing areas.
Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison, joined PMHC Mayor Adam Roberts and local representatives today to mark the occasion with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“This upgrade responds to strong population growth in this region, providing improved access for residents to local services, including health, schools and small businesses,” Ms Aitchison said.
“We know the community has been calling for this upgrade, and today we’re delivering safer, faster and more reliable trips for locals and visitors across the Coast.”
The scope of works included the duplication of the road between Greenmeadows Drive and Matthew Flinders Drive, as well as upgrades to key intersections. In addition to the expanded carriageway, the project delivered new shared pedestrian and cycling paths, improved crossing points, and enhanced road safety features. Environmental protections were also incorporated, including koala-exclusion fencing and a dedicated fauna underpass.
Water, wastewater, and utility infrastructure were upgraded alongside the roadworks, with close to five kilometres of pipeline installed.
Mayor Roberts described the completed project as “a landmark achievement for our region” and underscored the wider benefits beyond transport.
“This is more than just a road upgrade. Our commitment to meeting current and future water and wastewater infrastructure needs has also been considered,” he said. “This project shows what can be achieved when we invest in infrastructure that supports growth, enhances liveability and strengthens our regional economy.”
He also noted the local economic boost provided by the appointment of regional contractor Ditchfield Contracting, which generated new jobs during delivery.
The Ocean Drive project is part of the State Government’s broader $30 billion-a-year infrastructure pipeline, which is focused on building essential services and transport links across NSW, including in regional communities.
Planning is already underway for further upgrades in the region, including the Lake Road Duplication, as the government looks to future-proof key corridors in line with sustained growth.
