Ballina Shire Council is inviting the community to help shape a more accessible and inclusive future, with its draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) now on public exhibition.
The updated DIAP outlines how Council plans to deliver services, design spaces and improve access to information to support people of all abilities to participate fully in community life. The plan is an important step towards building a community where everyone feels welcome, supported and able to engage fully in everyday life.
Social and Community Development Officer Kiara McBeath said community feedback would play a key role in shaping the final plan.
“It is important we review the existing plan and make sure it captures and reflects the community’s priorities. This plan is shaped by lived experience and community input, and we encourage everyone — particularly people with a disability, their families and carers — to review the draft and have their say,” McBeath said.
“Real inclusion comes from listening and learning. This is an opportunity for people to share their experiences, highlight barriers, and help us identify practical actions that will make a genuine difference in everyday life across our community.”
The DIAP recognises improving accessibility and inclusion benefits the broader community by supporting older people, families with young children, people with temporary injuries and visitors, while strengthening connection and wellbeing for all.
Community members are encouraged to view the draft plan and provide feedback online via Your Say Ballina. A face-to-face community feedback session will also be held on Thursday, 7 May, from 2pm to 4pm at Ballina Shire Council’s Customer Service Centre, 40 Cherry Street, Ballina.
Feedback closes on 29 May, with all submissions helping to inform the final plan to be presented to Council in June.
