Time is running out to nominate outstanding First Nations leaders for the 2026 Yandaarra Aunty Grace Roberts Awards, with nominations closing on Friday 29 May.
The annual awards, which have run since 1999, recognise Aboriginal community members and organisations across the Coffs Harbour region who demonstrate leadership, service and dedication to their community.
Presented by the City of Coffs Harbour in partnership with the Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the awards celebrate those making a lasting contribution to community connection and quality of life for First Nations people.
Coffs Harbour Mayor Nikki Williams encouraged the community to nominate people making a difference.
“Whether they be high achievers or always willing to go the extra mile for others – this is the time to recognise them by putting them up for an award,” Mayor Williams said.
“We are looking for more nominations across the board.”
The awards honour the legacy of Aunty Grace Roberts, who was widely respected for her leadership, guidance and tireless work supporting the community.
Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee Chair Aunty Deb Dootson said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate local role models.
“It’s about recognising someone in your city – an Aunt, Uncle or group – who had done wonderful things,” Aunty Deb said.
“Nominating someone is easy. Just hop on the City of Coffs Harbour’s website and write the best story you can about the person you are nominating.”
Award categories include the Aunty Grace Roberts Memorial Community Development Award, Aunty Award, Uncle Award, Aboriginal Community Organisation or Business of the Year, Sports Achievement, Arts and Cultural Achievement and Youth of the Year.
Non-Aboriginal people are also encouraged to nominate Aboriginal individuals or organisations.
Winners will be announced during a gala ceremony at Yarrila Place on 6 July as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations in Coffs Harbour.
“The legacy Aunty Grace left behind makes her a beautiful person,” Aunty Deb said.
