The old Macksville Bridge will light up yellow this week as Nambucca Valley Council backs National Road Safety Week 2026 and its message to “Drive So Others Survive”.

The campaign runs from 17 to 24 May and aims to remind drivers that every decision made behind the wheel can affect other road users, wildlife and the wider community.

Nambucca Valley Council General Manager Bede Spannagle said the message was an important reminder that road safety was a shared responsibility.

“To be able to drive on roads is a privilege and it is a shared responsibility to keep our roads safe,” Mr Spannagle said.

“This week we’re lighting up the old Macksville Bridge in yellow to support National Road Safety Week.”

“This year’s message is powerful, as it encourages us to remember we can affect other people, wildlife, and our environment every time we get behind the wheel. So let us always pledge to drive so others survive.”

National Road Safety Week encourages motorists to slow down, watch for pedestrians, give cyclists space and take extra care around schools and buses.

Drivers are also being reminded to always wear seatbelts, avoid distractions and plan journeys properly by checking vehicles, scheduling rest stops and allowing plenty of travel time.

Council said while the bridge would shine yellow throughout the week, the message about safe driving needed to continue year-round.

The campaign comes amid continued concern about the road toll across NSW, with authorities repeatedly warning about the dangers of speeding, fatigue, distraction and drink or drug driving.
