The Darrel Chapman Fun Run is gearing up for its biggest year yet, with organisers expecting around 1,500 participants to pound the streets of Lismore this Sunday in aid of sick children.
The event, now in its 31st year and proudly sponsored by National Australia Bank Lismore, returns to Lismore on Sunday, 30 August, with runners and walkers starting on Woodlark Street to raise vital funds for Our Kids, the charity that supports sick children.
Our Kids Fundraising Coordinator Rebekka Battista said online registrations were already ahead of last year’s pace.
“Every registration counts and every donation brings us closer to our goal of purchasing new equipment for our hospitals,” Ms Battista said.
“Last year’s event attracted more than 1,300 participants and raised over $35,000 to help Our Kids purchase vital medical equipment for sick children.”
“We’re hoping to beat that this year, with online registrations for Sunday’s Darrel Chapman Fun Run already topping those of last year.”
This year’s funds are earmarked for a Panda Neonatal Resuscitaire Unit for the Emergency Department at Murwillumbah District Hospital, to support critically ill newborns and babies. Funds raised at last year’s event went towards a GlideScope video laryngoscope system for the Emergency Department at Byron Central Hospital.
Ms Battista said there was plenty of fun on offer alongside the fundraising, with participants encouraged to dress up as they run, walk or jog.
“There’s also plenty of fun to be had on the day, with participants encouraged to dress up and run, walk or jog in whatever takes their fancy.”
“Over the years, the event has seen everything from Elvis and gorillas to plenty of tutus and even a Where’s Wally make an appearance.”
“So, whether you’re running for a cause, dressing up for fun or simply getting active with family and friends, there’s something for everyone at the Darrel Chapman Fun Run.”
The action kicks off at 7am with the Lismore Masters 21km and the Lord Taverners 10km run, followed by the family-friendly Terania Consulting 4km walk and run at 9am.
Those already registered online can collect their bibs today, Friday, 28 August, from 9.30am to 4.30pm at NAB Bank on Woodlark Street. Anyone yet to register can do so at the same time and place, or from 6am on race day at the registration tent on Woodlark Street.
Funds raised through the event go towards paediatric equipment for hospitals across the Northern Rivers, helping provide medical care for children closer to home.
