New bridge opens on Old Bangalow Road

Old Bangalow Road rail bridge in Byron Bay.

The NSW Government has completed a major upgrade of the Old Bangalow Road rail bridge in Byron Bay, improving safety, accessibility and efficiency for motorists and pedestrians.

The former timber bridge, on the non-operational Casino to Murwillumbah railway line, has been replaced with a modern steel arch structure and widened to accommodate two lanes of traffic.

The upgrade increases the bridge’s load limit to 42.5 tonnes, allowing heavier vehicles to cross safely and improving traffic flow.

The upgraded bridge meets current engineering and road safety standards, providing a safer and more reliable crossing for the local community.

The bridge is part of the Country Regional Network (CRN), managed by network operator UGL Regional Linx (UGLRL).

The project supports the NSW Government’s commitment to improving regional transport infrastructure and accessibility for communities across the state.

Transport for NSW Director Contract & Corridor Management Sam Knight said the upgrade would deliver significant benefits for the Byron Bay community.

“The new bridge is safer, stronger, and easier to use for both drivers and pedestrians. Projects like this show our ongoing commitment to improving regional infrastructure. It’s about making travel safer and more reliable for everyone.”
