Canadian man seriously injured in Byron Bay assault

A Canadian man is in a serious but stable condition after being attacked by a group of men in Byron Bay late on Sunday night.

The 28-year-old had been drinking with about five unknown males in a park on Jonson Street when he was assaulted by the group around 11:40pm. He fled into bushland in the aftermath before managing to flag down a passing police patrol car on Butler Street, where officers rendered first aid at the scene.

He was initially taken to Byron Bay Hospital before being transferred to Tweed Valley Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries including a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and spinal injuries.

Detectives have launched a formal investigation into the incident.

Two of those believed to be involved in the assault are thought to be as young as 16 or 17 years old.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward, particularly those with dashcam or mobile phone footage that may assist investigators.
